Churay Mariya Gordeevna (Marusya Churay, Churaivna) is a legendary Ukrainian national singer, writer and composer. She lived in the middle of 17 century (1625 - 1653) in Poltava in the Cossack’s family. Character of Marusya Churay as the author of Ukrainian national folk songs ('Oh, don’t walk Grytsu', 'Cossacks whistled' and others) was appeared under the influence of Lithuanian works of 19 century. There weren’t any documentary evidence and written national traditions about Churay. The plot of the song 'Oh, don’t walk Grytsu' was assumed as a basis of the Shakhovskoy’s novel 'Marusya is a Ukrainian Sapfo' (1839). And many other novels (ballads, poems, drama, narratives) were written during 19-20 centuries on Ukrainian, Poland and Russian languages (K. Topolya, B. Zalevskiy, O.Chumina and others). In Ukrainian soviet literature the plot of the ballad was created by I. Senchenko, I. Mikitenko, L. Zabashta, I. Khomenko, L. Kostenko (poetry 'Marusya Churay', 1979) and others. The balled 'Oh don’t walk Grytsu' was translated in Polish (1820), Czech (1822), German (1822), French (1830), English (1848) and other languages.
