The following press release has been received and is being circulated on behalf of the British Antarctic Territory:"We understand that during a recent visit by a private person to the unmanned British Antarctic Territory Base at Hope Bay, a number of items bearing British Antarctic Territory postage stamps were marked by him with a handstamp closely resembling the official cancellation used by the British Antarctic Territory postal administration and indicating that this was effected at Hope Bay. All stamp dealers and collectors are put on notice that the person concerned has no authority under
| British Antarctic Territory postal law to place such markings on the items in question or in any way to effect acancellation or franking for the purposes of such law. Moreover, there is currently no official or agent of the British Antarctic Territory postal administration operating at Hope Bay. Accordingly, any marking imposed by the person concerned, and in particular any marking purporting to show that an article bearing a British Antarctic Territory postage stamp has recently been franked or cancelled at Hope Bay, has no status or validity under British Antarctic Territory postal law and the article should not be treated as having been properly franked or cancelled by a recognised postal administration." |
