WORLD WILDLIFE FUND STAMP SERIES DEPICTING THE OCEAN SUNFISH (Mola Mola), THE WORLD'S LARGEST BONY FISH

On Monday, 24 February 2003, the Post Office of Penrhyn placed on sale the official issue of the World Wildlife Fund picturing the huge Ocean Sunfish (Mola Mola). To most people in the world this will be their first view of this strange fish.

Though inhabiting the Pacific Ocean and the warm and temperate parts of all other oceans; any sight of the huge Ocean Sunfish in its natural habitat would be an extremely rare occasion. It is one of the oddest looking fish anyone will ever see. It has an enormous circular flattened body, but does not have a tail, and is known to grow over 14 feet and weigh as much as 3,000 to 4,000 pounds. It feeds on jellyfish, small crustaceans, and small deep water fish. The gentle giant is harmless to people.

The series has four denominations: 80c, 90c, $1.15 and $1.95. The stamps are 28.45 x 42.58 mm in size, and are printed in sheets of four stamps. A marginal area on each sheet below the stamps shows a larger view of the Sunfish, and like the stamps bears the official WWF logo. The full sheet size including the marginal area is 95 x 132 mm.
