EUROPEAN POSTAGE STAMP EXHIBITION BRNO 2005 ANTONIN PROCHAZKA: PROMETHEUS

On the 17th March, 2004 the Ministry of Communications of the Czech Republic will issue a commemorative postage stamp in the denomination of 26,- to promote the European postage stamp exhibition BRNO 2005. The stamp bears an engraver's transposition of the painting Prometheus by Antonfn Prochdzka.

A. Prochdzka, a Czech painter and illustrator, studied under V. Bukovac, H. Schwaiger and M. Svabinsky at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. He was a member of the Eight group, the Manes Association of Fine Arts, the Brno Group of Artists, etc. His early works were influenced by E. Munch, V. van Gogh, H. Daumier and El Greco. Later he arrived to cubism, using an original way of developing its premises. In the 1930s he dealt with pastoral composition, mythology and allegory, and gradually developed his own version of neo-classicism. He also created both monumental works and illustrations. The engraved version of the painting Prometheus brings us back to his cubistic period. The stamp is completed with the texts PROMETHEUS 1910-11, ANTONIN PROCHAZKA (1882-1945) and MORAVIAN GALLERY IN BRNO in Czech.

The author of the designs of the issue and engravings was ac. painter and graphic artist Vaclav Fajt.

The stamp, sized 40 x 50 mm, was printed by the Post Printing House in Prague by recess print from flat plates in yellow, orange, red, blue and dark brown in the arranged printing sheet of 4 stamps and 1 label bearing the logo of the exhibition and the texts EVROPSKA VYSTAVA POSTOVNICH ZNAMEK BRNO 2005 and EUROPEAN POSTAGE STAMP EXHIBITION BRNO 2005.

There is 1 First Day Cover incl. commemorative cancellation; the cachet is an engraver's transposition of the drawing Mother with her child by A. Prochazka (a drawing in pen and coloured chalks), which originates from the 20's of the past century. The cover was printed by recess print from flat plates in dark green.

The stamp is valid for inland and international postage from 17th March, 2004.
