50th Anniversary of the Åland Flag
The most important symbol of the Åland autonomy is most certainly our own flag. In 2004, the Åland flag celebrates its 50th anniversary and the occasion will be commemorated with a stamp issue.
Initially, the struggle for an Åland flag was both hard and heated. As early as 1922, only one year after Åland received its autonomy, the first Åland flag was hoisted. It was used for a long time, despite the fact that it was never an official flag.
In 1952, Åland finally got the right to its own flag, and the first flag to be introduced was blue with a golden cross. In the yellow cross there was a narrow, blue cross. The President of Finland, however, did not approve of this design which was seen as being too similar to that of the Swedish flag.
Towards the end of 1953, the parties agreed on the design of the present flag, and the first legal and official flag of Åland was hoisted in April of 1954. The flag was soon to become a popular symbol of Åland, and it is now used in all official connections.
